Full Moon Names Inspired by Wildlife

Wolf MoonWolf Moon

January Wolf Moon

It’s thought that January’s full Moon came to be known as the Wolf Moon because wolves were more likely to be heard howling at this time. It was traditionally believed that wolves howled due to hunger during winter, but we know today that isn’t accurate. Howling and other wolf vocalizations are heard in the wintertime to locate pack members, reinforce social bonds, define territory, and coordinate hunting.

Buck MoonBuck Moon

July Buck Moon

The full Moon in July is called “Buck Moon” because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by. Several other names for this month’s Moon also reference animals, including “Feather Moulting Moon” (Cree) and “Salmon Moon,” a Tlingit term indicating when fish returned to the area and were ready to be harvested.

Beaver MoonBeaver Moon

November Beaver Moon

This is the time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges, having laid up sufficient food stores for the long winter ahead. During the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-ready pelts. Alternate November Moon names highlight the actions of animals preparing for winter and the onset of the colder days ahead. “Digging [or Scratching] Moon,” a Tlingit name, evokes the image of animals foraging for fallen nuts and shoots of green foliage, and bears digging their winter dens. The Dakota and Lakota term, “Deer Rutting Moon,” refers to the time when deer seek mates, and the Algonquin “Whitefish Moon” describes the spawning time for this fish.
